On 19 May 1919, the founder of modern Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk arrived in the city of Samsun as a commander of the Ottoman army to inspect rumours of discontent in army ranks and pending uprisings by ultra-nationalist Greek bandits.
